Rome started as a small civilization off the west coast of the Italian peninsula. The Tiber river crossed through Rome allowing travel by water as well as easy water access. From there sprouted a civilization that did not realize what it would become.
Romans were builders as well as destroyers. They built and innovated hundreds of common objects we see today around the world.
The design of their cities as well as street layout is commonly seen today, as well as the military training the used. They believed the soldiers should be strong physically as well as mentally, which was not commonly seen during that period of time. Gladius training was popular and used greatly, even today we see more modern versions of that type of war training and during the Revolutionary War that type of training appeared.

In order to gain more power the Romans had to develop a professional, full time military. They took some ideas from the Spartan tactics and training like many other countries did. But they put their own spin on it and invented many new ideas and battle tactics. Such as the tortoise, the wedge. skirmishing formation, repel cavalry, and the orb. These tactics as well as the ruthless generals such as Marc Antony and Julius Caesar, lead them and gained them their reputation as the most powerful army in the world.
As well as at the barracks or on the battle field, things in the Roman city-states and capitals had to be kept in order to maintain and control the empire's large size. The central Roman government was divided by Diocletian, a roman emperor. He separated it in to four different parts ruled, by 4 different emperors. This was called Tetrarchy. The romans used a mix of republican and democratic ideas to rule their people. This way of government worked out for decades, until the gap between rich and poor became larger. The civil war that struck out after a series of rebellions, affected and devastated Rome for a long period of time. Thankfully when Augustus came into power the balance was restored and Rome was at peace.
For centuries Rome ruled dominant and created a mass of an empire. Along the way many new inventions as well as innovations were made by Rome. Rome left an imprint on the world that pushed many places to follow in it's foot steps and use it's ideas. The Roman legacy is lasting and will be recognized for many years to come.
