I selected the Roman Military to be my topic for the National History Day project. The reason I chose this topic is that it connects to this year’s theme, leadership and legacy. As well as the fact that I find interest in the topic itself, so it is obviously a good choice based on what I am knowledgeable of. I also decided to pick it, because we are studying it in class, and the notes we take on it will help me to accelerate further in my research. All of these things contributed to my final decision, and made it be an easier choice. That fit what is possible for me to accomplish, as well as gave me something that I can do that may allow me to exceed expectations, and wow the users of my website.
To conduct my research, I first got taught how to use the databases in class. Then, I took that knowledge and began to explore the databases to find primary sources. After I perused it for a while, and gathered enough I moved on to secondary. Later on, I began to venture out of the databases, and took some ideas that I wanted to study further to get get started on my research for my topic. Soon, I gathered multiple notes in my notebook, as well as on the computer. Then, I began to keep track of the URLs for the different websites I used, so hopefully later on I could add them to my bibliography in my website.
When choosing my presentation style I immediately came to the conclusion that the website would be the best for me. I have a limited, yet useful set of skills when it comes to computers, and have many other family members who are the same way, or even better. Also I think a website is the most helpful and in the end rewarding presentation style, because even when you’re finished people will go to the website and learn new things. Also it could even help another student build a website and gain notes for their website which would be a great thing. Unlike the other ways to present, websites are the most interactive and there are more options. So creativity is welcome, and I was able to expand more on my ideas by having the choice to use videos. It is a proven fact that any student or even adult likes to watch videos instead of read. Or most would. Which gives websites a one-up, because most would enjoy watching a video and also getting a choice to read and watch pictures. Instead of just reading, or just listening. All in all, the website seems like the best option to me, and that’s why I picked it. On the other hand, to create my project was another story. I started with a fresh plate, and from there I added tabs and figured out what I want the layout for each page to be. Then, I began to work my way through each tab, adding my notes as well as getting more and more information over time. After that I went back to add my pictures, and other primary sources such as timelines, etc.. Finally, when I neared the end of my project, I then began to work on making the bibliography. After I finished that my website was complete and at it’s finest.
This years National History Day theme is leadership and legacy. Which are two things that connect to my topic of Roman military perfectly. The
Roman military is the army of the century, and is known by all even to this day. From the new military innovations, to the new battlefield tactics and
strategies. Everything has left an imprint on some place or some army in the world. The Roman military has definitely left a long lasting legacy on
the world, and will continue to for decades to come. Even after the Roman Empire decline people still recognize as the greatest empire in the world,
with a military that conquered resistance. Which leads to how the Roman military connects to leadership. You can have amazing weapons, and
money, but without a good general your army is about as powerful as a bunch of farmers. So thanks to the leadership of Marcus Antonius, Julius
Caesar, etc.. The Roman empire would not have spread, and they would not have conquered as much land. Therefore the leadership of some Roman
generals is the reason the Roman military was so powerful.
